Source Description
In June 2025, Academy scientists traveled to meet with our partners at Roatán Marine Park in Honduras. We had two goals: First, to commemorate the grand opening of Coral Restoration Center Roatán, the first coral-rearing facility in Honduras, and second, to actually start using it—by collecting wild coral gametes to bring into the lab and spawn.
After a record 2023 heat wave that caused a catastrophic bleaching event, the opening of the new coral rearing lab and the spawning of 3,000 baby corals inspires so much hope for the reefs.
This collaboration is part of an ongoing Coral Research and Development Accelerator Program (CORDAP) grant that is co-led by Cal Academy and Roatán Marine Park (RMP).
