With two rocky beginnings, it’s a true silver lining. A young grizzly cub was found wandering alone in an Alaska neighborhood. Cubs normally spend up to three years with their mothers, and the Alaska Department of Fish & Game believed he would not survive independently.
At the Detroit Zoo, hand-reared polar bear cub Laerke needed Laerke and her sister Astra were born in November. Two days after their births, Laerke appeared weak and stopped moving. Animal care staff provided lifesaving care for months. With the time away, it became clear that returning Laerke to her mother and sister was not an option.
Jebbie came to the Zoo in July and was gradually introduced to Laerke. The cubs now do nearly everything together — running, chasing each other, wrestling, rolling around and lots of typical bear play.
We’re thrilled that Jebbie found sanctuary, and Laerke now has a much-needed companion. Starting today, the pair grows together in the Arctic Ring of Life habitat. Like many animals at the Detroit Zoo, Laerke and Jebbie can they like to spend their time and may not always be visible outdoors.
