It is renowned for its extensive range of habitats and commitment to providing every animal with a suitable environment that mimics their natural habitat.

The visitor experience at the Detroit Zoo is designed to be interactive, immersive, and educational. The zoo boasts some innovative exhibits, such as the Polk Penguin Conservation Center, the largest penguin facility in the world, and the Arctic Ring of Life, the largest polar bear exhibit in North America. Other highlights include the Australian Outback Adventure, the Butterfly Garden, and the African Grasslands. Visitors can attend keeper talks, feedings, and live presentations throughout the park, providing opportunities to learn more about the animals and their conservation.

The Detroit Zoo is deeply committed to conservation and sustainability. It is home to the Detroit Zoological Society's (DZS) Center for Zoo and Aquarium Animal Welfare and Ethics, which conducts research and offers training to advance the welfare of animals.
