Journey with Dr. Jake Owens Through Argentina
Ituzaingo
Dr. Jake Owens, the Zoo’s Director of Conservation, traveled to Argentina to offer his expertise in consortium building, partnership development, and conservation planning to the newly forming International Giant Otter Alliance. The Alliance is a global effort to conserve giant otters listed as endangered on the IUCN red list of threatened species.
Iberá
The Alliance won’t interrupt the important work already underway – a giant otter reintroduction in Iberá National Park, where teams have successfully reintroduced other species, including giant anteaters, deer, and jaguars. Dr. Owens visited the site to ensure the reintroduction plan for the offspring of two otters met all the IUCN requirements and saw the facilities and habitat in person.
El Impenetrable
Dr. Owens drove northwest to El Impenetrable National Park, where he stayed several days in a framed canvas tent housing a couple of beds, a nice bathroom, and a porch just a few feet away from the lagoon. He got to experience the camaraderie of field teams living together in difficult conditions and the site’s beauty. He also observed a giant otter in the lagoon and even closely encountered a collared peccary.
