Overview

Located in Oakland, California, the Oakland Zoo has been a beloved institution since its inception in 1922. Nestled within the 525-acre Knowland Park, the zoo covers around 100 acres and is home to more than 850 native and exotic animals. It's renowned not only for its commitment to animal welfare and conservation but also for its distinctive approach to habitat design which offers expansive environments for its residents.

Visitors to the Oakland Zoo are treated to an expansive array of exhibits, divided into themed areas replicating the animals' natural habitats. For example, the zoo's California Trail showcases the state's native wildlife and emphasizes conservation and education. An aerial gondola provides breathtaking views of the Bay Area and allows guests a unique perspective of the animal habitats. In addition to its animal exhibits, the zoo also boasts a children's play area, a carousel, a roller coaster, and a train that tours the park, offering fun for the entire family.

Conservation is at the heart of the Oakland Zoo's mission. The zoo actively supports and funds numerous conservation projects both locally and globally. The Oakland Zoo has been involved in protecting and rehabilitating native Californian species, such as the mountain lion, the California condor, and the western pond turtle. Additionally, the zoo's Quarters for Conservation program allocates a portion of each ticket sale to support global conservation projects.
