Overview
The Palo Alto Junior Museum & Zoo is a small but beloved destination in Palo Alto, California, that blends science learning with up-close animal encounters. Originally founded in 1934 by local science teacher Josephine O’Hara, the museum has a long history of sparking curiosity in young minds. After a major renovation, it reopened in 2021 with a modern design, new exhibits, and more space for both animals and hands-on learning. Run by the City of Palo Alto, it focuses on making science fun and accessible for young children and families.
The zoo is home to more than 50 species, including bobcats, raccoons, bats, hedgehogs, and reptiles—many of which are native to the region. Designed with kids in mind, the zoo includes features like a walk-through aviary and animal demonstrations that let visitors get a closer look at how these animals live and behave. It’s an interactive space that encourages questions and discovery, helping children understand the importance of animals and their habitats. The approachable setting makes it easy for families to engage with wildlife in a meaningful way.
Beyond the animals, the museum side is filled with hands-on science exhibits focused on topics like physics, biology, and earth science. Everything is geared toward kids under 12, with activities that encourage them to touch, explore, and experiment. The museum also hosts school field trips, science camps, and family events throughout the year to keep learning going outside the classroom. With its blend of playful learning and real-world discovery, the Palo Alto Junior Museum & Zoo remains a favorite spot for curious kids and their families.
