Incoming cuteness alert from Marvin and Cadbury.
With Mother’s Day just around the corner, it is the perfect time to celebrate the bond between a mother and her child. At the Bronx Zoo, two new pairs of mother and baby animals are making headlines with their adorableness – Marvin the Mandrill and Cadbury the Red Kangaroo.
Marvin the Mandrill
Marvin, the newest addition to the Mandrill family, arrived at the Bronx Zoo in January this year. Mandrills are native to the rainforests of Central Africa and are the world’s most giant monkeys. Marvin was born to their mother, Mandara, and their father, Jabari, and weighed just 310 grams. But now, at barely three months old, he has grown swiftly and is already exploring the African Rainforest exhibit with his mom and dad.
Mandrills are known for their colorful faces, unique to each individual. According to Patrick Thomas, General Curator at the Bronx Zoo, “Marvin is a curious and playful baby who loves to watch and learn from his parents. Marvin’s colorful markings were already apparent even as a tiny infant.”
Cadbury the Red Kangaroo
Cadbury, the red kangaroo joey, is the first for mom Kimberly and dad T-new and is quite the sight to see. The red kangaroo is the largest marsupial on earth and can be found all over mainland Australia. Cadbury has been sticking close to his mom since he was born in October 2020 but is now getting more adventurous and taking bolder hops out of his mom’s pouch.
Cadbury will also be an ambassador for his species, as red kangaroos are primarily found in Australia. The Wildlife Conservation Society is working to ensure their conservation and preservation through breeding programs and educational initiatives.
According to Chuckpaul Barranco, Curator of Mammals at the Bronx Zoo, “Cadbury is a fun and energetic joey, constantly hopping and bouncing around with his mom. We are thrilled to have him at the Bronx Zoo and to showcase the beauty and uniqueness of his species.”
Celebrating Mother’s Day – Both for Humans and Animals
As we approach Mother’s Day, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the unconditional bond between mother and child — not just in humans but also in the animal kingdom. For mothers, raising and nurturing their young ones is a full-time job filled with challenges and rewards that contribute significantly to the species’ survival. In addition, the love and care mothers give, sometimes underappreciated, should always be celebrated.
The Bronx Zoo is proud to celebrate the wonders of the animal kingdom and the roles of mothers, especially in the wake of this pandemic. Even in difficult times, their tireless dedication has been awe-inspiring for zoo staff and visitors.
So, if you’re looking for something unique this Mother’s Day weekend, why not head to the Bronx Zoo and visit Marvin and Cadbury? It will surely be a treat to see these new duos and enjoy the beauty of motherhood.
