National Invasive Species Awareness Week: Taking Action Against Harmful Non-Native Plants and Wildlife

National Invasive Species Awareness Week (NISAW) is an international event to raise awareness about invasive species, the threat they pose, and what can be done to prevent their spread. This year, NISAW takes place from February 20 to February 26, 2023.

Invasive species are non-native plants and animals that cause harm to the environment, economy, or human health. They can outcompete native species for resources such as food and habitat. In addition, they can introduce new diseases or parasites into ecosystems.

Governors across the United States have recognized NISAW by issuing proclamations in their states. For example, Idaho Governor Brad Little proclaimed February 20 to February 26 as Idaho Invasive Species Awareness Week in order to “raise public awareness of the threats posed by invasive species and encourage citizens to take action against them”. Similarly, Texas Governor Greg Abbott declared February 20-26 as Texas Invasive Species Awareness Week in order to “educate Texans on how they can help protect our state’s natural resources from the harmful impacts of invasive species”.

The National Invasive Species Council (NISC) has developed a list of best management practices for preventing the spread of invasive species. These include:

  • Cleaning boats and other recreational equipment before entering a new body of water;
  • Disposing of bait properly;
  • Planting only native plants;
  • Not releasing pets or aquarium fish into the wild;
  • Learning how to identify invasive species; and
  • Reporting sightings of suspected invasives.

In addition, individuals can get involved in local volunteer efforts such as removing aquatic vegetation from lakes or rivers or helping with surveys for early detection of new invaders. There are also many organizations dedicated to fighting invasive species such as NAISMA (North American Invasive Species Management Association), which provides resources for identifying and managing invasives as well as information about upcoming events related to NISAW.

By taking action during National Invasive Species Awareness Week, we can all help protect our environment from further damage caused by these harmful non-native plants and wildlife. By following best management practices and getting involved in local volunteer efforts we can make a difference in preserving our natural resources for future generations.
