A Unique Wakeup Routine for Giant Pandas

It is a privilege to be able to work with giant pandas. Recently, I was reminded of this when I watched Yang Yang’s wakeup routine. It consists of a slow yawning and stretching session accompanied by a distinct vocalization. It only happens once in the morning, so if you miss it, there won’t be another chance to hear it for the rest of the day. Giant pandas are polycyclical, meaning they are awake or napping in two to four-hour cycles during the day and night. When Yang wakes up from his naps later in the day, it is straight back to business and he immediately looks for his next set of bamboo. Megan H., Keeper II, Mammals.
