Will Smith, a red panda with an unforgettable presence, left a lasting mark at the Happy Hollow Park and Zoo. Born on July 4, 2015, at the Bronx Zoo, his journey to Happy Hollow began in April 2016. At just 9 months old, he was a key figure in the grand opening of the red panda habitat. Over the course of nine years, he became a cherished resident, captivating visitors and forming bonds with different companions as directed by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Red Panda Species Survival Plan. Understanding his life and its challenges provides valuable insights into both his personal journey and broader issues within the species.
For much of his life, Will battled Addison’s disease, a chronic adrenal insufficiency affecting red pandas. This condition led to symptoms such as weight loss and endocrine alopecia, a notable result of hormonal imbalance. Will’s nearly 10-year lifespan was on par with the median longevity for red pandas in captivity, illustrating both his resilience and the challenges faced by the species in controlled environments.
Addison’s disease is recognized, though not thoroughly understood, within the red panda population. This adrenal gland disorder results in insufficient production of certain hormones, leading to significant health complications. Research into this condition in red pandas remains crucial, as it seeks to uncover prevalence, causation, and effective treatments. Collaborating with zoological institutions and research facilities, scientists are striving to advance knowledge and improve health outcomes for these endangered animals.
As we consider conservation efforts, the Red Panda Species Survival Plan plays a pivotal role. Coordinated by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), it focuses on maintaining genetic diversity, monitoring health trends, and advising on suitable pairings to foster successful breeding in captivity. Initiatives within this plan not only aim to support current populations but also to ensure that future generations of red pandas are sustained and protected from challenges such as habitat loss and health disorders.
The commitment demonstrated by Happy Hollow in their conservation strategies reflects a deep dedication to the preservation of red pandas. While the habitat is temporarily empty following Will’s passing, the park continues to prioritize the health and welfare of these animals. Working closely with the Red Panda Species Survival Plan, Happy Hollow is determining future actions to house and support red pandas, balancing educational opportunities for visitors with conservation imperatives.
Will Smith’s absence is felt deeply by the Happy Hollow staff and the community of visitors who delighted in his presence. His role extended beyond that of a zoo inhabitant; he was a symbol of the zoo’s conservation efforts and an ambassador for the species. By sharing memories and recognizing his contributions, both the zoo and its visitors honor his legacy and renew their commitment to red panda conservation.
Through understanding Will Smith’s story, we learn not only about the challenges of one remarkable red panda but also about the broader efforts to protect and preserve a species under threat. By supporting research and conservation initiatives, we play a part in ensuring these enchanting creatures continue to thrive for generations to come.

Happy Hollow is saddened to share the passing of red panda Will Smith. Born on July 4, 2015, at the Bronx Zoo in New York, Will was transferred to Happy Hollow in April 2016 at just 9 months old, and was part of the red panda habitat grand opening. He had several different companions over his 9 years here at the recommendation of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Red Panda Species Survival Plan, but Will himself has been a staple in the habitat since the beginning.
Will had been under treatment for Addison’s disease, an adrenal condition, for the past several years, and had more recently been experiencing increased symptoms such as weight loss and endocrine alopecia (hair loss), a side effect of the hormone imbalance created by Addison’s disease. Will was nearly 10 years old, the median lifespan of red pandas in captivity.
Unfortunately, Addison’s disease is not uncommon in red pandas. There is ongoing research surrounding this condition in the species to fully understand how widespread it is, why red pandas get it and what treatment options are most effective.
Happy Hollow’s red panda habitat will be temporarily empty with Will’s passing, but the park and zoo is committed to the conservation of this endangered species. Happy Hollow will be working with the Red Panda Species Survival Plan to determine the best course of action for housing the species at Happy Hollow moving forward.
Will was a much beloved part of the Happy Hollow family, and his passing is difficult for the Happy Hollow team. We know he was loved and will be missed by zoo visitors as well, and we appreciate your compassion. Please feel free to share your favorite memories of Will below.
