Happy birthday to Sasha and Zuri! The Lincoln Children’s Zoo is abuzz with celebration as these remarkable cats turn two. Since their arrival in June 2023, Sasha and Zuri have become stars, not only for their charismatic presence but also for their growth and adaptation. This milestone marks an opportunity to reflect on their journey and highlight what it means to care for such creatures in a captive environment.
Zookeepers at Lincoln Children’s Zoo, including Tori and Mike, have been pivotal in nurturing Sasha and Zuri. Tori speaks warmly of watching them grow into confident cats, noting that this transformation did not happen overnight. Similarly, Mike observes their blossoming personalities and increasing confidence. His pride in their evolution over the past year is palpable.
Caring for Sasha and Zuri requires both science and compassion. Their enrichment, including playful activities and treats like bloodsicles, is a critical part of their care. Enrichment activities are designed to simulate natural behaviors, providing mental and physical stimulation. Bloodsicles, essentially frozen blood, offer nutritional benefits while engaging their instincts. These enrichment practices underscore a commitment to animal welfare.
Sasha and Zuri’s personality development is a testament to the importance of tailored animal care. Confidence building is a gradual process involving positive reinforcement and consistent interaction. As Mike mentioned, training is integral, fostering skills and promoting well-being. Careful attention to individual personality traits ensures each animal receives appropriate socialization and environmental stimuli.
The broader scope of zoo management and wildlife conservation is reflected in the care for Sasha and Zuri. Zoos play a critical role in conservation efforts, providing education and supporting breeding programs for endangered species. According to the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, such programs are vital for maintaining genetic diversity and preserving threatened species.
The Lincoln Children’s Zoo recognizes the dual responsibility of education and conservation. Sasha and Zuri’s presence helps raise public awareness about wildlife and the importance of habitat preservation. Engaging visitors with real-life stories fosters a connection with nature, encouraging efforts to protect our planet’s biodiversity.
Happy birthday to Sasha and Zuri serves as a reminder of the interconnection between animal care and global conservation goals. Through dedicated care and thoughtful enrichment, zoos contribute to the survival of species and the education of future generations. As we celebrate their birthday, it is an opportunity to reflect on the significance of zoo animals in conservation and education.

Happy birthday Sasha and Zuri!! Today is their 2nd birthday! 🎉
Sasha and Zuri arrived at Lincoln Children’s Zoo in June of 2023. While celebrating their birthday, zookeepers reflect on what it’s been like to care for them over these last two years!
“Raising them since day one has been incredibly rewarding. I have enjoyed most watching them grow into the confident cats they are today because they definitely didn’t start out with that confidence!” -Keeper Tori
“The best part about working with them for me has been seeing them grow into their personalities and to see how far they’ve come with their training and just confidence in general. I wasn’t here for their first year, but just in the past year they’ve grown so much and I’m really proud of the little teenagers they’ve become” – Keeper Mike
For their birthday, Sasha and Zuri were given fun birthday themed enrichment to interact with, including one of their favorite treats, bloodsicles!
Please help us wish Sasha and Zuri a very happy birthday!
