The African Veldt is a sweeping savanna-style exhibit that features iconic African megafauna, including African Elephants, Southern White Rhinoceroses, Giraffes, Scimitar-horned Oryx, and Red River Hogs. These animals inhabit expansive, open habitats with vantage points that are ideal for photography. With such an open concept, the exhibit attempts to recreate the vast grasslands of Africa, incorporating old-school zoo design elements that the zoo plans to renovate in the near future.
In 2006, the elephant habitat was enhanced with a dedicated pool that allowed for bathing and wallowing, providing both animal enrichment and a more dynamic visitor experience. The exhibit's layout encourages guests to observe animals from multiple vantage points, with pathways winding through the open area to maximize viewing opportunities. Keeper-led presentations and behind‑the‑scenes animal care insights help educate the public about these species and overall conservation efforts. The cohabitation of diverse hoofstock and megafauna creates an ecosystem‑like display of interspecies activity on the African grassland. Altogether, the African Veldt offers a thoughtfully curated blend of education, space, and a vintage charm, set alongside Africa’s iconic wildlife.
