Overview

The Gladys Porter Zoo, nestled in Brownsville, Texas, is a wildlife sanctuary spanning 31 acres and home to about 400 species, representing over 1,600 individual animals. Founded in 1971, the zoo is a complex of exhibits and facilities that offers an inviting environment for visitors while providing top-notch care for its animal inhabitants.

The zoo was initially funded by the Earl C. Sams Foundation and was managed by Gladys Porter, the daughter of Earl Sams. A devoted animal lover and conservationist, Gladys Porter was dedicated to creating a zoo that focused on species preservation and education.
