Description

Home to the zoo’s Polar Bears, the Northwest Passage exhibit opened on March 1, 2006, following a $23 million investment. The exhibit includes an underwater viewing building that allows guests to observe polar bears swimming in their semi-aquatic habitat. Additional features include a Sea Lion observation bubble and a 500-seat amphitheater where daily sea lion shows are presented to educate and entertain visitors. The design highlights the animals and landscapes of the Pacific Northwest, blending important native cultural elements with naturalistic immersive habitats.

The theme pays tribute to the First Nations culture of British Columbia, reflected in both architecture and interpretive messaging. Six hand-carved totem poles are displayed throughout the area and were honored with a Native American blessing ceremony upon their arrival. Conservation messages inspired by Chief Seattle are featured prominently to raise awareness about wildlife protection. The Northwest Passage also features Bald Eagles and White-necked Ravens, further expanding the Pacific Northwest wildlife experience.
