The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that sets the highest standards in animal care and welfare for its accredited zoos and aquariums. AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums are committed to providing a safe, educational, and fun family experience.

AZA also works to ensure the survival of selected wildlife species through their various programs. These programs include Species Survival Plans (SSPs), which manage species populations in human care, as well as Conservation Education Programs, which help educate the public about conservation efforts. Additionally, AZA has established guidelines for animal welfare, veterinary care, safety protocols, and more.

AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums must undergo rigorous inspections to maintain their accreditation status. The inspection process includes evaluating the facility’s animal housing areas, veterinary care program, safety protocols, conservation education efforts, research projects, financial stability and more.

The AZA is an important organization that helps ensure the health and wellbeing of animals in human care while also educating the public about conservation efforts. With its high standards for animal care and welfare, AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums provide a safe environment for families to enjoy learning about wildlife.
